Local fishermen had a concession to harvest wild oysters every year. They transported the oysters on &#8220;plates&#8221; (a kind of small flat-bottomed boat) by sculling or, for the luckiest among them, pushed by a motor. <\/p>\n\n<p>They unloaded their oysters into metal baskets that were stacked alongside the peeling shack.<\/p>\n\n<p>Then began the long, monotonous task of separating the oysters from each other and cleaning them: de-stemming.<\/p>\n\n<p>But cadmium pollution from the Aveyron and the construction of a commercial port put an end to this activity in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-right:0;padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);text-transform:uppercase\">The old oyster port today<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euronat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Port-aux-huitres.jpg\" alt=\"Port aux huitres\" class=\"wp-image-4752\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.euronat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Port-aux-huitres.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.euronat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Port-aux-huitres-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.euronat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Port-aux-huitres-768x471.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">The revival<\/h3>\n\n<p>Today, all that&#8217;s left of the old oyster port are the sheds. But in recent years, the municipality of Le Verdon has decided to <strong>give the old port a new lease of life.<\/strong> It has once again become a place of life and activity. <\/p>\n\n<p>Artists, craftsmen and restaurateurs have set up shop in this typical estuarine setting.<\/p>\n\n<p>Three painters, resin sculptor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/S.RIDEAU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">S\u00e9bastien Rideau, <\/a>world-renowned painter-sculptor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albenfactory.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alben<\/a>, wood sculptor and ceramist, as well as a photo club workshop\/exhibition room, have taken up residence in the old port huts.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">A visit, a lunch<\/h3>\n\n<p>Lunch or dinner at the old oyster port takes you back into the history of this village, often overlooked by tourist guides. You&#8217;ll find : <\/p>\n\n<ul style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A cr\u00eaperie<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A guinguette for grilled meats and gambas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A tapas bar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An oyster bar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">A night market is held every Tuesday evening in summer.<\/h3>\n\n<p>The old oyster port takes on an air of Jacques Tati&#8217;s &#8220;Jour de f\u00eate&#8221;. An old-fashioned,<strong> good-natured<\/strong> atmosphere emanates from the place. The locals rub shoulders with the occasional holidaymaker, who has had the good fortune to be more curious than the rest.
